IPL Pre-Post Care Instructions

There are a number of medications, medical or health conditions, herbal supplements, and other treatments and lifestyle choices that may compromise the safe delivery of light-based treatments or lead to complications post-treatment. 

Risk Factors:

  • sunburn, the recent use of a solarium, or the application fake tan to the area within the last two weeks
  • eczema or psoriasis in the treatment area 
  • birthmarks, moles or raised lesions in the treatment area
  • a past history of cold sores or shingles in the treatment area 
  • waxing, plucking or the use of depilatory (hair removal) creams in the treatment area in the last two months (for hair reduction treatments)
  • melanotan injections
  • the use of photosensitising medical or herbal supplements in the last six months
  • pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • medical conditions such as seizure, epilepsy, uncontrolled diabetes, vitiligo or autoimmune diseases 
  • previously or currently undergoing a course of chemotherapy or radiation therapy.

Clients with ANY of the above Risk Factors will be re-scheduled or cancelled according to our Appointment Policy


Avoid 🙅‍♂️

  • direct sun exposure for at least 4 weeks prior to treatment.
  • self-tanners or spray tans for four weeks prior to treatment.
  • wearing makeup on the day of treatment.
  • tretinoin, retinoic acids, glycolic/salicylic acid at least 3 days prior.
  • bleaching, waxing, plucking for at least 4 weeks. 
  • using aspirin, ibuprofen, iron supplementation, anticoagulants, vitamin E, or herbal supplements such as gingko, garlic, or ginseng for at least 2 weeks. If a medical condition requires so, then the appointment must be rescheduled. Cancellation policy applies. 
  • photosensitizing medications including doxycycline and tetracycline should be discontinued three days prior to treatment.

Use ✅

  • gentle skincare products
  • active non-irritating skin vitamins B & C
  • gentle topical melanin inhibiting factors 
  • sunscreen daily


  • Generally, a “sunburned” feeling on treatment area is experienced for up to 24-48 hours.
  • To minimize swelling, apply cold compresses to the treatment area for 10 minutes of every hour on the day of the treatment.
  • Sleep on your back with your head elevated on the first night post-treatment.
  • The gradual darkening of pigmentation will occur. Patients are advised not to rub the treatment area or try to scrub the area away. This is part of the healing process and should start to slough off in 4-7 days.
  • Strict adherence to sun protection/sunscreen. Direct sunlight should be avoided for 4 weeks post-treatment.
  • Resume a regular skin regimen once the treatment area is back to “normal.”
  • Multi-Focus IPL/DPL should be scheduled every 2-4 weeks (depending on treatment reaction) and can be done for a series of 3-6 treatment.

  • retinol, BHA, ENZY, exfoliant after 7 days 
  • gentle topical melanin inhibiting factors to prevent hyperpigmentation
  • sunscreen daily
